Today is the planned 'shutdown'
of Trinidad and Tobago by various trade unions and other organizations. It can be a virtual shutdown if employees, employers and the general public heed the call by the various organizations. This may mean no public transport so that commuters can't get to work, school etc. Now the government has decided to honor our olympic medalists today as well. So what does today hold for the common citizen of tnt? The truth is that no one really knows; parents don't know if to send their kids out to school as they may not reach to school at all or if they do will teachers heed the call of their union to stay away from work today. It's a very volatile situation as we say in tnt 'any number could play' meaning anything could happen. The shutdown can be a resounding success or a dismal failure. Its all up to the folks who can make it happen- the workers, the business owners, the public transport folks etc. As to the objective behind the shutdown it is quite appropriate as food prices have doubled or trippled in the past year with no corresponding salary increases. It is really hard on most families. The cost of public transport and of very much everything else has also risen over the past year or so. Our leaders really need to take stock of the feelings and needs of the electorate as many people are disenchanted with the politicians both ruling and opposition. So the end result of the planned shutdown is up to us the citizens of tnt.
